The leader of a Muslim advocacy group called for the President Donald J. Trump to be removed from office.
The president has been charged with crimes ranging from obstruction of justice to obstruction of a congressional investigation, but he has so far maintained that he is a devout Muslim who believes that Allah created humans in His image.
The group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, issued a statement Monday urging Trump to resign.
It called on Congress to investigate and prosecute the president’s policies that it said were motivated by animus toward Muslims.
In a statement, the council said Trump has failed to “demonstrate the dedication and leadership he displayed throughout his presidency, including his efforts to build bridges between the Muslim community and Americans.”
“The Muslim American community has repeatedly expressed its disappointment that President Trump continues to engage in anti-Muslim rhetoric, and his administration has repeatedly ignored or ignored requests to address the issues of Islamophobia and discrimination against Muslims,” said Ibrahim Hooper, the executive director of the Council for American-Islam Relations.
“We call on the President to immediately resign, and call on all American Muslims to work together to condemn and counter the actions of this president.”
Trump is currently on vacation, but it is unclear if he will continue to be at the White House.
